Takara grew up in California living with her mother for the first 13 years of her life. Takara and her mom had a very close bond and spent a lot of time together. In 2001, Kasatka gave birth to her second calf. In doing so, she taught Takara how to take care of her future calves. On May 3, 2002, Takara gave birth to her first calf, a daughter named Kohana. Takara conceived Kohana through artificial insemination with Tilikum, who lived in Florida. This pregnancy was one of four featuring orcas on the Animal Planet show That's My Baby.
